Fernie Trails

The directors of the Fernie Trails & Ski Touring Club are meeting Thursday May 23 8:00 P.M. @ Freshies.

All members or interested people are invited to attend.

Discussion will be about Island Lake, Thunder Meadows, Tunnel Creek and summer activities.

To call this a “bridge” in light of the the new standard set by George would be a stretch…so I’m going to suggest this structure is a crossing.

When Mitch, Ian and I arrived to install the timbers, three helpers arrived seconds later!

Ian thouroughly tested the structure.

Fernie has enjoyed a historic December for ski touring with a healthy snowpack and great temperatures. The snowpack has been stable with Moderate and Low avalanche hazard ratings by the CAC. There is a work party at tunnel creek hut on Sat Oct. 6th. The work includes: brush clearing, staining, painting, and finishing building the composting toilet.

Access is a 40 minute hike from the upper parking lot (truck access only).

Good mountain bike ride by Fisher Mountain, just west of the Wardner-Fort Steele Road ending Horseshoe Lake. Can do a 23 kilometer shuttle on the Mause Creek Road and gain 800 vertical meters. On Saturday, August 4th starting at 11 pm sharp from Fernie Aquatic Center. This race loop involves 3 climbs over 28 kilometers and totals just over 1300 meters elevation gain. Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club has spent 5 years building Hyper Ventilation and rebuilding Hyper Extension to a higher standard. In this time we also built Castle Rocks Trail, South Castle and Southern Comfort. This summer besides regular trail maintenance we will be building an easier 10% grade climb to the summit of [...]

The crew have been spending a lot of time cutting bush and moving dirt on Hyper Extention. Between last summer and this rainy spring we have upgraded and bermed most of the trail to a faster flow. Should complete the process in the next several weeks.

The crew did a couple days of upgrading to the bottom of Oh Dear and Coal Discovery Trail. Added boardwalks over the bad mud areas and did a 100 meter reroute to get ride of the rest of the muddy section.

Earlier this week the Mt Proctor trails, (Swine Flu, Mad Cow, and Far Side) were under scrutiny with respect to existing Grazing Rights and the impact from riding, in particular dogs and high traffic events.

Concessions were made to allow riding and these are:

1. No dogs on the trails 2. No events on the [...]

The crew continued working on Old Goats and MegaHurtz throughout the weekend, 3 days of hard work in the rain. Replaced the old boardwalk on MegaHurtz that we constructed 15 years ago when we built the trail network between Mt Fernie Park and the Ski Resort.

The FTA boys and gals erected the new Gorby Creek Crossing Bridge to Old Goats Trail today. Thanks to Doug and George for the nicely crafted 32′ bridge and decking. Cycled up River Road, Roots and Hyper Ventilation on May 2. Only had to walk several short sections on the way up to the top.
